Why is Reductil prescribed?
Reductil is a medicine prescribed by physicians to assist individuals
in their weight loss efforts. Reductil exerts it's action by making
individual feel satisfied with the ingesting less food.
When is it inappropriate to take Reductil?
Individuals with the following medical conditions should not take Reductil:
- Hypertension
(high blood pressure) individuals with uncontrolled or poorly controlled
high blood pressure. Reductil can substantially increase blood pressure
in some patients.
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Allergies to
sibutramine or any of the other ingredients in Reductil
- Cardiovascular
disease i.e. history of heart attack, stroke, coronary artery disease,
arrhythmia (irregular heart beat), congestive heart failure, agina
(chest pain), transient ischemic attacks (TIAs),
- Epilepsy (any
of various neurological disorders characterized by sudden recurring
attacks of motor, sensory, or psychic malfunction with or without
loss of consciousness or convulsive seizures)
- Liver disease
- Glaucoma (Any
of a group of eye diseases characterized by abnormally high intraocular
fluid pressure, damaged optic disk, hardening of the eyeball, and
partial to complete loss of vision)
- Kidney disease
- Alcohol or drug
addition
- Eating disorders
(anorexia nervosa, bulimia, etc.)
- Pheochromocytoma
(a usually benign tumor of the adrenal medulla or the sympathetic
nervous system in which the affected cells secrete increased amounts

How long can an individual take Reductil?
The safety and effectiveness of Reductil has not been established in
controlled clinical trials for more than one year.
Is Reductil appropriate for pediatric or geriatric populations?
The safety and efficiency of Reductil in the pediatric population have
not been established. In addition, clinical studies concerning Reductil
did not include a sufficient number of elderly individuals age 65 years
and older to determine whether they respond differently from younger
individuals. So at this time pediatric and geriatric populations should
refrain from using Reductil until more studies are completed.
Which individuals benefit from Reductil?
Reductil is appropriate for those individuals who are considerably overweight,
30 percent above their ideal weight or a body mass index of 30 or greater.
Xenical may also be appropriate for those individuals who are overweight,
20 percent above their ideal weight or a body mass index of 27 or greater,
and also have significant risk factors such as high blood pressure,
high cholesterol or diabetes.

How does one determine their body mass index (BMI)?
BMI is calculated by dividing an individual's weight in kilograms by
their height in meters squared.
The following chart can assist individuals in calculating their BMI:
Locate the appropriate height in the left-hand column of the chart.
Proceed across the
top row of the chart to the appropriate weight.
The number where
these variables meet is the BMI. For example, an individual who weighs
190 lbs. and is 5'6" would have a BMI of 31.

Are there any other benefits to taking Reductil other than weight reduction?
Yes, studies have shown that even a modest weight loss as a result of
Reductil and diet can significantly reduce the following life-risk factors:
- Reduction of
blood glucose levels (decreasing the risk of diabetes)
- Lowering of diastolic
and systolic blood pressure (decreasing the risk of heart disease
and strokes)
- Reduction in
blood cholesterol levels (decreasing the risk of heart disease and
strokes)
- Reduction of
blood levels of uric acid (decreasing the risk of gout)
- Reduction in
the cases of sleep apnea (irregular breathing during sleep)
- Weight reduction
is also likely to improve appearance, which has a positive affect
on self-esteem and motivation.
Are there any side effects associated with the use of Reductil?
Yes, as with most prescription medications there are side effects associated
with the use of Reductil. Most of the side effects of Reductil are mild and decrease
in severity with continued use of the medication.
The most common side effects associated with Reductil include: dry mouth,
constipation and insomnia (inability to sleep) Less common side effects
includes: headache, increase in blood pressure and increase in
heart rate.
If an individual
develops any side effects including but not limited to the following
he/she should discontinue the medication and seek medical attention:
angina (chest pain), rapid heart beat (in excess of 100 beats per minute),
pounding or irregular beats, extreme restlessness, blackouts, disorientation,
depression, muscle stiffness, high fever, pain in the eyes, dilated
pupils, abdominal pain, nausea and/or vomiting, swollen ankles, seizures,
blurred vision, etc.
Should Reductil be taken during pregnancy or while breast feeding?
The safety of Reductil has not been established in pregnant women, therefore
Reductil should not be used in women who are trying to get pregnant
or in women who are pregnant. Women should not take Reductil while breastfeeding
their infant because it is not known whether Reductil is excreted in
the breast milk.
Does Reductil affect blood pressure
or heart rate?
Yes, in clinical studies Reductil did cause a small rise in blood pressure
and an slight increase in heart rate. Individuals should not take Reductil
if they have high blood pressure or heart conditions.
Should Reductil be use in combination with nutritional supplements?
Nutritional supplements such as minerals, vitamins and amino acids (except
tryptophan) can be taken along with Reductil. Weight loss and other
nutritional supplements that may contain stimulants should not be used
without approval from your local physician.
Can individuals drink alcohol or caffeine based beverages while taking
Reductil?
Reductil may increase the sedative effects of alcohol, individuals may
consume moderate amounts caffeinated drinks without serious complications.
Does Reductil interact with the use of birth control pills?
The suppression of ovulation by oral contraceptives was not inhibited
by Reductil.
What is the appropriate dose of Reductil?
Individuals should take one capsule per day, preferably in the morning
with or without food?
Can an individual operate a car or heavy machinery while taking Reductil?
Individuals, as with any medication, should take Reductil for a trial
period and refrain from these activities until they are sure they are
not having any side effects that would effect their judgment.
Are there any withdrawal symptoms once an individuals discontinues the
use of Reductil?
Some individuals may experience a mild headache or an increase in appetite,
however, withdrawal symptoms are rare.
